Acne Treatment
Acne Treatment
Luckily today there are many choices for acne treatment, including medicinal
creams and solutions, complete integrated systems, natural products, oral medications, physical treatment, as well as mechanical and
laser acne treatments.
Many of the acne treatments are over-the-counter types, which means people can go to a
local pharmacy to the buy a medication recommended by friends or something that has been suggested by an ad they have seen on television or
even something they have heard about from any source. One of the most widely used ingredients in acne treatment medicine is benzoyl peroxide which is found in gels and ointments. It works in acne
treatment by removing dead skin cells that accumulate on the skin. It is also used to keep the skin free from the bacteria that causes
acne. Benzoyl peroxide is an acne treatment that has been used for
many years and has been found to be safe. The main side effect of using benzoyl peroxide whether for acne treatment or
prevention is that it can cause dry skin.
Other effective and popular ingredients used in acne treatment are salicylic acid, resorcinol and sulphur. Of all these acne treatment medicines, however, research indicates that benzoyl peroxide is by far the most widely used.
Benzoyl peroxide can be found in liquids and bars for cleansing the skin as well as in lotions, creams and gels which are
applied directly to the skin.
Prescription Medications Used for Acne Treatment
Topical antibiotic preparations containing clinamycin or erythromycin are prescribed for acne treatment by physicians to kill the bacteria causing the acne eruptions. Since the topical use of
these medicines do not have an effect on skin cell shedding or sebrum production both of which are causative agents in acne eruptions, they
are usually used with other prescription medications, such as other creams and lotions that normalize the skin shedding and decrease acne
production. The doctor may also precribe oral antibiotics like erythromycin, or tetracycline in the acne
treatment program. Acne treatment is not apparent overnight usually. In fact, many times, it may take four to eight weeks
befor results are seen.
Other Forms of Acne Treatment
Other forms of acne treatment include laser therapy, light therapy, chemical
peels and microdermabrasion. Laser and light therapy are used to reach the deeper layers of skin without harming the skin's
surface. Chemical peels and microdermabrasion are used in acne treatment
where scarring has occurred.
